The 29 Schengen countries

Switzerland is gobsmackingly scenic and brutally expensive — a $30 burger is normal in Zermatt. But the trains are punctual to the second, the views are postcard-perfect, and a Swiss Travel Pass turns the country into one giant rolling spectacle.

Austria is the empire's elegant remnant — Habsburg palaces, the world's deepest classical music tradition, and ski runs that invented the sport. Vienna is the cultural centerpiece; Salzburg and the Salzkammergut lake district are the postcard.

Slovenia packs Alps, coast, and karst caves into a country smaller than New Jersey. Ljubljana is the capital you didn't know you'd love — vibrant, walkable, dragon-themed. Lake Bled and the Soča Valley are the headliners.

Liechtenstein is one of the world's smallest countries — just 62 sq mi, sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria. Most visit for a few hours to add a passport stamp, but Malbun's alpine hiking and the prince's castle (closed to public, but visible) deserve more time.

Estonia is the most digital country in Europe — you can do almost anything online — wrapped around a fairytale medieval capital. Tallinn's old town is genuinely magical; the rest of the country is forest, bog, and quirky islands.

Latvia is dominated by Riga, which has Europe's most concentrated Art Nouveau district. Outside the capital: long Baltic beaches, Gauja National Park's castles, and a national obsession with choral music.

Lithuania is the largest of the Baltics, with a baroque capital (Vilnius) and a UNESCO sand-dune peninsula (Curonian Spit) shared with Russia. Catholic and Polish-influenced, distinct from Latvia/Estonia.

Germany is a federation of 16 distinct states, each with its own personality — Berlin's edge, Bavaria's tradition, Hamburg's maritime cool, the Rhine's fairy-tale castles. Trains are punctual-ish, English is excellent, and the pricing is fair compared to Western neighbors.

Czechia gives you Western European beauty at half the price. Prague is the inevitable headliner — possibly Europe's most photogenic capital — but Český Krumlov, Karlovy Vary, and Pilsen reward anyone who gets out of the city.

Poland gives you immense history (good and harrowing), beautiful old towns, dramatic Tatra mountains, and the lowest prices in Schengen. Kraków is the standout; Warsaw is a phoenix-from-WWII story; Gdańsk is an underrated Baltic port.

Hungary is dominated by Budapest — one of Europe's most photogenic cities, split by the Danube into hilly Buda and flat Pest. Beyond the capital: Eger and Tokaj for wine, Lake Balaton for summer escape.

Slovakia is small and frequently skipped — a mistake. Bratislava is a fun half-day stop from Vienna; the High Tatras are real-deal alpine; Slovak castles outnumber any country its size.

Bulgaria fully joined Schengen in March 2024 (land borders) — it's now one of the cheapest entry points to the Schengen Area. The country offers Black Sea beaches in summer, Bansko skiing in winter, and a rich Orthodox monastic tradition year-round.

Romania fully joined Schengen in March 2024. Transylvania is the postcard — Saxon villages, fortified churches, Bran ("Dracula's") Castle. The painted monasteries of Bucovina are UNESCO and unique. Bucharest surprises with belle-époque grandeur and a strong food scene.

Copenhagen is one of the world's most liveable cities — bike infrastructure, world-class design, New Nordic cuisine that started a movement. The rest of Denmark is small castles, beach towns, and the surreal Aarhus art scene.

Sweden is half forest, half coast, and quietly luxurious. Stockholm sprawls across 14 islands; the west coast (Gothenburg) opens to fishing villages; the north (Lapland) is reindeer, midnight sun in summer, and aurora-prime in winter.

Norway is in Schengen but NOT in the EU — your 90/180 days here count toward the Schengen total. The country is a series of jaw-droppers: Geirangerfjord, Lofoten Islands, the Trolltunga cliff. It's expensive enough to plan around, but the scenery is the payoff.

Finland is sauna culture, Nordic design (Marimekko, Iittala, Alvar Aalto), and Lapland — where Santa officially lives in Rovaniemi. Helsinki is small and walkable. The real magic is going north.

Iceland is Schengen but not EU. The country is a geological theme park — volcanoes, geysers, glaciers, black-sand beaches — concentrated within an 800-mile Ring Road. Two-thirds of visitors stick to the Golden Circle; the magic starts past it.

Italy packs more UNESCO sites than any country, plus the planet's most influential cuisine and 4,700 miles of coastline. The classic first trip — Rome, Florence, Venice — is classic for good reason, but a second visit unlocks Puglia, Sicily, and the Dolomites, where the crowds thin and prices halve.

Spain runs hot in every sense — late nights, sun-soaked plazas, and a tapas culture that turns dinner into a moving feast. Each region feels distinct: Catalan modernism in Barcelona, Andalusian Moorish heritage in Seville and Granada, the green Atlantic coast in San Sebastián and Galicia.

Greece is two trips in one — mainland archaeology and 200+ inhabited islands. Athens deserves 2–3 days, then island-hop. The Cyclades (Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Milos) are the postcard; the Ionian (Corfu, Kefalonia) is greener; the Dodecanese (Rhodes) is closer to Turkey.

Portugal punches way above its weight: the cheapest Western European country, with two world-class cities, the Douro wine valley, and a 500-mile Atlantic coast that the Algarve sun-seekers and surfers fight over. English in the cities is excellent.

Croatia joined Schengen in 2023 and adopted the euro the same day. The 1,100-mile coast is the prize: Plitvice waterfalls inland, Dubrovnik in the south, Istria's truffles in the north, and a thousand islands in between.

Malta is a tiny Mediterranean archipelago with English as an official language (former British colony) — the smoothest landing for first-time European travelers. Valletta is a baroque/medieval gem; Gozo is the slow-paced sister island; the diving is world-class.

France is the most-visited country on Earth for a reason: world-class museums, three coastlines, alpine villages, and a food culture that treats lunch as a civic duty. It's also a forgiving first stop in Europe — English is widely spoken in tourist zones, and the TGV puts most of the country within a half-day of Paris.

The Netherlands is small, flat, and brilliantly organized — half a country reclaimed from the sea, traversed by 22,000 miles of bike paths, and dense with world-class museums. English fluency is near-universal; you can have a normal conversation with anyone.

Belgium is small, dense, and underrated — Bruges and Ghent are storybook medieval, Antwerp is design-forward, Brussels is gritty-cosmopolitan. The beer scene is unmatched: 1,500+ varieties, served in custom glasses by locals who care.

Luxembourg is tiny, wealthy, multilingual, and has free nationwide public transit (yes, all of it). The capital's old town is dramatic — a medieval fortress on cliffs. Best as a day-trip from Brussels, Paris, or Frankfurt, or paired with Mosel Valley.
