Portugal punches way above its weight: the cheapest Western European country, with two world-class cities, the Douro wine valley, and a 500-mile Atlantic coast that the Algarve sun-seekers and surfers fight over. English in the cities is excellent.
Pastéis de nata at Manteigaria, then a tram-28 ride through Lisbon's hills.
Where to go
Best time to visit
April–June and September–October. Algarve coast peaks July–August — book months ahead. Lisbon and Porto are wonderful year-round; even January averages 60°F. Easter brings Holy Week processions in Braga.
Score combines weather, crowds, and price (1–5). See the full matrix across all countries.
US-citizen tips
Multibanco ATMs (the green ones inside banks) are best. CP and Comboios trains are clean and cheap. Tipping: round up; 5–10% for good service. Bolt is cheaper than Uber. Tap water is safe but locals often drink bottled.
Local etiquette
Lunch 12:30–15:00, dinner 19:30–22:00. The 'couvert' (bread, olives, cheese) brought unsolicited is charged — wave it away if you don't want it. Always greet with 'bom dia' / 'boa tarde'.
Getting around
Alfa Pendular trains: Lisbon–Porto in 2:50. Buses (Rede Expressos) cover the Algarve. Rent a car for Douro Valley and Alentejo. Lisbon trams are charming but pickpocket-heavy on tram 28.

Common pitfalls
- ⚠Tram 28 is the worst pickpocket spot in Portugal — keep zero in pockets.
- ⚠Restaurants in Praça do Comércio (Lisbon) and Ribeira (Porto) are tourist traps.
- ⚠Don't rent a car in central Lisbon — parking nightmare and steep one-way streets.
🆘 Emergency reference
Works from any phone (locked, no SIM), free, multilingual operators, dispatches police/fire/medical.
US Consulate in Ponta Delgada (Azores) for islands.
Lost passport, arrested, hospitalized, victim of a crime → contact embassy first, then home insurer. After hours: the main line routes you to a duty officer.
