Pre-departure checklist — Schengen Guide

Everything we wish someone had handed us before our first Schengen trip. Print it, check it, ignore the parts that don't apply.

Passport & entry documents

US passport with 6 months validity past your return date

Schengen technically requires 3 months past departure, but airlines and some borders enforce 6. Renew early if close.

2 blank passport pages

For entry/exit stamps. Once EES is fully rolled out (late 2025/2026), stamps go away — but enforcement is uneven.

ETIAS authorization (from late 2026)

Apply online at travel-europe.europa.eu/en/etias only. €20 fee, valid 3 years. Beware copycat sites charging more.

Return/onward ticket

Border officers can ask to see proof you'll leave Schengen within 90 days.

Proof of accommodation (first night)

Hotel reservation or host invitation; rarely asked but easy to have on phone.

Proof of funds

€50–€100/day depending on country. Recent bank statement or screenshot of account is enough.

Money

Notify your bank of travel dates

Most modern US banks (Chase, Capital One, Charles Schwab) no longer require this, but check.

Get a no-foreign-transaction-fee card

Charles Schwab debit refunds all ATM fees worldwide. Capital One Venture and Chase Sapphire have no FX fees.

Carry €100–€200 cash for arrival

Get from your home bank or an in-airport ATM (skip currency desks — terrible rates).

Apple Pay / Google Pay set up

Accepted almost everywhere in Northern Europe; widespread elsewhere too.

Notify card to bank by app, not phone call

Most US banks let you flag travel in-app — takes 30 seconds.

Phone & connectivity

Get an eSIM (Airalo, Holafly, Saily)

$10–$30 for a regional Europe eSIM. Activates on arrival; works in all 29 Schengen countries.

Or T-Mobile / Google Fi if eligible

T-Mobile Magenta plans include free 2G data + cheap calls. Fi works as US plan abroad.

Download Google Maps offline regions

Especially before driving in Italy, Greece, Iceland.

Download Google Translate offline language packs

Camera mode is invaluable for menus.

Insurance & safety

Travel insurance ($60–$150 for a 2-week trip)

World Nomads, SafetyWing, or Allianz. US health insurance generally doesn't cover you abroad.

Photocopy/photo of your passport

Stored separately from the original. Email it to yourself too.

STEP enrollment (state.gov)

Free. US embassy will alert you to emergencies and help if you lose your passport.

Know your embassy's address

Bookmark it. Lost passports: in-person appointment + ~$135 + a few days.

Apps to install before flying

Trainline or Omio

Pan-European train booking; smoother than national sites for first-timers.

Bolt

Cheaper than Uber across most of Europe.

Citymapper

London + many EU cities; way better than Google for transit.

Google Translate, Google Maps

Both with offline packs downloaded.

Default messaging app in Europe; how Airbnbs and tour guides will reach you.

Wise

If you'll have any Euro expenses; multi-currency account with mid-market rates.

Packing essentials (US-specific)

Type C / Type F plug adapters

Skip the universal travel adapter brick — get 3 small Ceptics adapters for $12.

Step-down voltage NOT needed for phones/laptops

Modern chargers handle 100–240V. Hair dryer/curling iron from US: don't bring, buy local or use hotel's.

Comfortable walking shoes (broken in)

European cities = 8–12 miles a day on cobblestones.

Day bag with anti-pickpocket features

Crossbody, zipper-locking. Pickpocket hotspots: Paris metro, Barcelona Las Ramblas, Rome Termini, Lisbon tram 28.

Layers — even in summer

Mediterranean evenings cool fast. Northern Europe summers can be 55°F some days.

Day-of-flight

Check passport one more time

Number one cause of missed flights to Europe.

Arrive 3 hours early for international

Especially during EES rollout in 2026 — first-entry biometrics can add 30+ min.

Empty water bottle (fill after security)

Long-haul dehydration is real.

Download offline content for the flight

Spotify, Netflix, podcasts. In-flight Wi-Fi is hit or miss.
