Iceland

Reykjavík · ISK (Icelandic Króna) · Icelandic

Hub airports: KEF · Suggested stay: 610 days

Iceland is Schengen but not EU. The country is a geological theme park — volcanoes, geysers, glaciers, black-sand beaches — concentrated within an 800-mile Ring Road. Two-thirds of visitors stick to the Golden Circle; the magic starts past it.

Drive the Ring Road; soak in Sky Lagoon at sunset.

Where to go

Reykjavík
Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa, Sky Lagoon — the smartest day-1 base.
Golden Circle
Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss — half-day from Reykjavík.
South Coast
Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara black beach, Vík.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Icebergs in a lagoon; Diamond Beach across the road.
Westfjords or Snæfellsnes
Less-touristy Iceland; fjords, puffins, smaller crowds.

Best time to visit

June–August for full Ring Road access, midnight sun, and puffins. September–March for aurora (peak Sept and Feb–Mar). Avoid the F-roads (interior) outside July–early September; some only open with 4WD.

US-citizen tips

Iceland is in Schengen but not EU. Alcohol is sold at state-run Vínbúðin; airport duty-free is your friend. Card everywhere — even campsites. Tap water is among the best on Earth (sulfur smell from hot taps is normal). Rent a car (Blue Car Rental, Lava Car Rental) for the Ring Road.

Local etiquette

Always shower fully nude before any pool or hot spring (mandatory; enforced). Don't drive off marked roads — fragile moss takes decades to recover. Northern lights tours don't guarantee sightings.

Getting around

Rent a car — Iceland is built for self-drive. Ring Road takes 7–10 days minimum to do well. Reykjavík Excursions for tours if not driving.

Common pitfalls

  • Don't underestimate weather — it can shift hourly; safetravel.is for road conditions.
  • Booking Reykjavík hotels late = $400+/night; book 6+ months ahead.
  • The Blue Lagoon is touristy and expensive vs. Sky Lagoon or local pools — your call.
